Updated - Monday 19 October 2009
Peru’s President Alan García signed on 27 September 2009 a supreme decree that authorizes the transfer of US$ 7.4 million (€ 5.0 million) for 139 municipalities to carry out 174 potable water and basic sanitation projects.
The funds will come from the so-called equality fund which reassigns money saved from government austerity measures to projects that aim to reduce extreme poverty and will be included in the public sector budget for fiscal year 2009. The disbursement will go to co-finance water and sanitation projects in rural areas.
The districts to benefit are located in the departments of Apurímac, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Junín, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Loreto, Piura, Puno and San Martín.
