Peru: sanitation – two out of three installations not used
Updated - Tuesday 02 June 2009
Only one in three sanitation installations in Peru are actually used. Alternative Pro-poor Sanitation Solutions (APSS) in Peru, a programme supported by the Fondation Ensemble and the Water and Sanitation Programme (WSP), is trying to change this by acting simultaneously on supply and demand.
The programme, currently running in five pilot zones in Peru, aims to provide the most underprivileged groups with access to sanitation services. Its innovative approach involves stimulating demand by explaining the challenges and opportunities of sanitation and facilitating credit. Supply is strengthened by supporting local institutions and suppliers.
For more information, see the APSS pages on the Fondation Ensemble and WSP web sites listed below.
