Guyana: Govt, GWI undertaking projects to improve water, sanitation

Updated - Wednesday 18 March 2009

The Guyanese government and national service provider Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) are carrying out several projects under the Hinterland Water Strategy aimed at improving access to safe water and sanitation for inland communities, improving services to some depressed communities and ensuring safe water for 80% of surrounding settlements, government information agency GINA reported on its website. The measures include installation of a solar well to provide potable water in Kartabo, in region seven, where mining activities have polluted the Cuyuni river.

The program is expected to expand to several other communities in the region. Additionally, a new water treatment plant was built at Bartica for US$ 2.34 million (€ 1.86 million), which will serve over 10,000 people.
