Brazil: sewerage worst public service in country
Updated - Tuesday 11 December 2007
Sewerage is the worst public service in Brazil and grows less than 1 percentage point a year, while computer access grows by four percentage points every year. This is one of the findings from a study recently released by thinktank Getúlio Vargas foundation (FGV) and NGO Trata Brasil. According to the coordinator of the study, Marcelo Neri, sewerage is the service with the lowest access, lowest growth and worst quality when compared to solid waste collection, electricity and water services.
The federal growth acceleration programme PAC's sanitation disbursements are considered important by Neri, as well as the fact that Brazil's upcoming 2008 elections will take place in the UN's International Year of Sanitation.
