In 2006, the UN General Assembly designated 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation (IYS). This is the official IYS web site, maintained by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).

The site provides background information on IYS, highlighting the health, economic, social and environmental benefits of sanitation, including key resources for each, and a list of resources mapping progress on sanitation. Background information is provided on hygiene promotion, sanitary facilities, water quality, wastewater management, water quality and emergency sanitation. The resources section includes a sanitation library of nearly 70 online documents, news and links to relevant organisations.
