Peru: Government approves potable water, sewer projects in Piura region

Updated - Thursday 24 May 2007

Peruvian President Alan García has signed a supreme decree approving three integrated potable water and sewerage projects considered a priority for sanitation in the northeastern Piura region, local paper Diario Correo reported. The three projects will require a total investment of 116 million soles (EUR 27.8 million), the paper reported. The projects are to improve and increase the potable water and sewerage systems in cities Sullana and Bellavista for 95 million soles (EUR 22.8 million), Marcavelica for 10 million soles (EUR 2.4 million), and Querecotillo for 11 million soles (EUR 2.6 million). The initiatives will be financed mainly by the "shock investment" in potable water and sewer works announced by the government after declaring the sector in a state of emergency. Project proposals are to be submitted to authorities by end-August 2007.
