Bangladesh: hygiene promoters teach safe sanitation practices

UNICEF is training more than 1,000 community hygiene promoters across Bangladesh to encourage people to adopt safer hygiene practices. The programme is supported through the Sanitation, Hygiene Education and Water Supply Bangladesh Project, which is funded by the UK Department for International Development.

Muhammad Yunus unveiled a deal between his pioneering Grameen Bank and French multinational Veolia Water to provide clean water to poor rural communities in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi economist also sought support from President Nicolas Sarkozy for creating more microcredit schemes to fight poverty, particularly in Africa.

Arsenic in the food-chain, “has the potential to cause more serious problems in the future than arsenic in drinking-water", he said.
Bangladesh, Dhaka: ADB provides US$ 202.5 million to improve water supply

The Dhaka Water Supply Sector Development Program will receive two loans totalling US$ 200 million and a US$ 2.5 million technical assistance grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The loans are for urban water supply sector reform and rehabilitation and strengthening of the water supply system in Dhaka.
Bangladesh, Dhaka / Chittagong : donors pledge US$ 800 million for water and sanitation

Five donors have agreed to give US$ 800 million in loans for drinking water and sanitation projects. The Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank and Danish International Development Assistance (Danida) will fund projects in Dhaka, and the governments of Japan and the Republic of Korea in Chittagong.

Bangladesh: disaster preparedness keeps post-flood diarrhoea fatality rate low

Despite the fact that more than 10 million people in Bangladesh were affected by the July/August 2007 floods, the diarrhoea case fatality rate of about 0.02 percent was extremely low. The extensive network of tube wells, effective government maintenance and repair systems, and emergency preparedness have helped keep diarrhoea in check.

Bangladesh: IRC team trains senior BRAC field staff in managing a five-year WASH programme

BRAC, the world’s largest NGO, commissioned IRC to organise a training programme for its senior field staff, mostly district managers who manage a project staff of around 1,500 people in an area of 2.5 million people. The training programme, held in February 2007, focused on supporting BRAC staff in implementing their new five-year € 57 million water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programme.
