Save the Children has been running School Health and Nutrition (SHN) programmes in Malawi since 1998. When the programmes started, only 42% of schools had access to clean water and none had hand-washing facilities. It is now phasing out the programmes, passing over responsibility to the government.

Malawi: learning from earlier community water kiosks problems in Lilongwe

A few years ago the Lilongwe Water Board's service through water kiosks suffered from inadequate response to system and community problems and lack of transparency in water billing, a WaterAid report in April 2008 showed. In response to a request for assistance from the community, WaterAid Malawi embarked on a strategic partnership with the Lilongwe Water Board, aimed at improving management of water services in unplanned low-income neighbourhoods. After 18 months the public/private/civil society partnership is producing change.

Community-managed toilets: Tiruchirappalli sets a good example

The city of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, India, is setting a good example with its community-managed toilets (CMTs). The city authorities, communities and NGOs have joined forces to install nearly 340 CMTs, most of which also have bathing and washing facilities.
