A Global Action Plan under G8 leadership is urgently needed to resolve a growing water and sanitation crisis that causes nearly two million child deaths every year, says the 2006 Human Development Report, released on 9 November 2006. Across much of the developing world, unclean water is an immeasurably greater threat to human security than violent conflict, according to the Report, entitled Beyond scarcity: Power, poverty and the global water crisis.

IRC News
Rutger heads IRC Information and Communication section
Rutger Verkerk has joined IRC as the new section head for Information and Communication. Rutger comes from Artsen Zonder Grenzen (the Dutch Médecins sans frontières) where he was Head of Facilities, Finance, ICT and the Information Documentation Centre.
IRC now autonomous foundation
IRC has become an autonomous Foundation, completing a long journey towards organisational independence. On 19 October 2006, IRC celebrated the successful conclusion of the enhanced autonomy process (as it was called for a long time) and the establishment of our new governance structure as a Foundation with a Board of Supervisors.
IRC 2007-2011: More focus and integration of activities
IRC will strengthen its position as an information broker, sector innovator and capacity builder over the next five years, to support sector efforts to reach the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It will also strengthen partnerships to increase the impact of its activities.
New: Research-inspired Policy and Practice Learning in Ethiopia and the Nile Region (RiPPLE)
IRC will play a substantial part in a new five-year research programme to advance evidence-based learning on water supply and sanitation financing, delivery and sustainability and improve equity of access for the poor in Ethiopia and the Nile region.
