Kenya: Dutch government stops financing water programme
Updated - Tuesday 27 June 2006
Minister for Development Cooperation Agnes van Ardenne calls a temporary halt to the implementation of education, environment and water programmes in Kenya, worth EUR 118 million. The reason is that the Kenyan government has not produced enough proof of success in its fight against corruption.
The Netherlands was to have set up a joint drinking water programme with UNICEF and provided a substantial contribution to the education programme being carried out by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). A new bilateral water and environmental programme for Kenya is also being suspended.
The Dutch government wants greater clarity in measuring and monitoring corruption, so that progress can be effectively identified.
