Handwashing: container/dispenser for water-scarce conditions

Updated - Friday 02 June 2006

NGO BushProof has developed a handwashing container and dispenser that is suitable for scaling up handwashing initiatives, especially in emergencies where time is short and water is scarce. Currently, the handwashing container is at the trial stage, and is being piloted in Northern Uganda. However, more pilot tests need to be done, and BushProof plans to pilot it elsewhere.

The main features of the device are:

  • low unit cost (EUR 3)
  • low flow rate of 2 litres in 16 minutes allows for adequate cleansing, while creating a greater incentive for use in water-scarce situations
  • logos can be printed on the container
  • the dispenser fits soft drink bottles, allowing longer-term use in case of damage to the container
  • the container is made from durable U/V-resistant polyethylene
  • the nozzle comes complete with a collapsible container, saving space and reducing transport costs
