Rainwater harvesting: mapping potential in Southern and Eastern Africa
Updated - Wednesday 13 July 2005
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Southern and Eastern Africa Rainwater Network (SEARNET) are developing maps to illustrate the suitability for rainwater harvesting in the region. The maps are produced in GIS format to help planners, investors and donors make decisions. The project will cover Botswana, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The SEARNET secretariat is currently looking for GIS data for all of these countries, on rainfall, topographic classification of slopes (DEM); evaporation rates; land use and cover; rivers and lakes; population and household information and poverty details; district and sub basins; water depth and groundwater availability; and water abstraction data for conventional water supplies such as boreholes, wells, springs, dams, etc.
