GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) won the International Business Leaders Forum Award for International Corporate Citizenship in Business in the Community's Awards for Excellence 2002. GSK (one of the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies) was recognised for its Personal Hygiene and Sanitation Education (PHASE) initiative, which operates since 1998 in Kenya, Nicaragua and Peru. PHASE provides hygiene and sanitation education for school children with the aim of reducing diarrhoea-related disease and deaths associated with poor hygiene. The awards winners were announced mid July at a gala dinner in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales. The awards are run in association with the Financial Times, sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry with assurance by AccountAbility.
