Internet and social media can be powerful tools to tell accurate, interesting WASH stories. Eight participants from the new Multimedia Journalism and Water course of RNTC (Radio Netherlands Training Centre) and IRC concluded that at the end of their three-week stay in Hilversum. They left for home with knowledge, tools, outputs and proposals for future multimedia productions around, water, sanitation and hygiene.

At SACOSAN-V in Nepal, IRC shared the WASHCost Calculator with South Asian governments and organisations working on sustainable sanitation. Kathy Shordt gave a sneak preview of the advanced tool based on an example from Venkatapuram, India.

IRC and the Ministry for Water, Hydraulic Infrastructure and Sanitation of Burkina Faso have decided in this international year of water cooperation to take action together to develop and promote sustainable WASH services in Burkina Faso. On October 1, 2013 they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their collaboration and to put into practice their shared vision.

WASHCost - a US$ 14.5m, five-year project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and implemented by the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC) - has been a bold, global attempt to gain accurate knowledge on disaggregated water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) costs in rural and peri-urban areas. This independent End-of-Project assessment, commissioned by IRC, reflects on the lessons learnt from the project.

IRC’s incoming Country Director for Uganda, Ms Jane Nabunnya Mulumba, is keen to strengthen relations with key sector partners when she starts in her new position on July 1st, 2013. With her 15 years of experience and Masters’ degrees in Communication and Public Policy Management, building relationships and partnerships has always been an important part of Jane’s work.

IRC welcomes the final report of the UN High Level Panel (HLP), which puts forward recommendations for post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While we are happy that the report includes an ambitious goal of universal access to water and sanitation by 2030, it is disappointing that it lacks a clear commitment to make WASH services sustainable.

Addis Ababa – 8 April 2013. Providing universal access to water and sanitation, the goal of the Ethiopian Government, is a huge effort that is transforming lives and the economy. The recently completed National WASH Inventory has been a major initiative to better monitor the performance of the water and sanitation sector in the country. Now that a good baseline has been established, the monitoring challenge shifts to making the data available, using data in plans and policy making, and updating. This will the subject of a seminar on Monday 8 April in Addis Ababa on the ‘National WASH Inventory: lessons learned and maximising value’, organised by the Ministry of Water and Energy, IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre and CCRDA-WSF.

Addis Ababa, 9-11 April 2013 - Monitoring is a critical building block for sustaining water and sanitation services. Which water and sanitation system are exactly out there? What is the status of these systems? Knowing is necessary for correcting, adapting, and planning for sustainable WASH service delivery. The Monitoring Sustainable WASH Service Delivery Symposium builds on this and provides a platform for gaining knowledge and discussing the challenges for improved monitoring. The symposium will be attended by some 380 WASH sector experts from all over the world.
