UNEP-FI and SIWI (2005). Challenges of water scarcity : a business case for financial inst itutions. Geneva, Switzerland, UNEP Finance Initiative. - 32 p. : 6 boxes, 1 fig., 3 tab. – 26 ref.

This report contains the results of a joint UNEP-FI and SIWI project on water-related challenges for financial institutions. It builds largely on the need to engage with the financial sector in dealing with water related challenges, by providing a basic set of risk drivers linked to water scarcity. It highlights the importance of private sector participation in the water sector for the benefit of water sustainability. As financial institutions, investors and capital markets become more responsible in their environmental, social and corporate governance practices, there is an intrinsic contribution yet to be made on how to become more active for the sake of sustainable development and for the world’s poorest population. The report presents a series of challenges for financial institutions and calls on them to become aware of these challenges and to engage in actions to overcome them. The goal is achieving sustainable viable solutions that can mitigate these potential challenges and, at the same time, contribute towards alleviating the burden of water scarcity on developing countries.
