Honduras: sharing experiences in the promotion of gender equity
Updated - Monday 23 August 2004
In response to the Ministry for Women Affairs in Honduras (INAM), the Water and Sanitation Program - Latin America and the Caribbean office (WSP-LAC) organised a videoconference to share WSP's experience in the promotion of gender equity in the Andean Region. INAM has already formulated a national policy to promote gender equity. The National Policy has been approved by the Honduran Congress. The video conference was attended by seventeen institutions from the water and sanitation sector in Honduras, including regulatory and planning entities. WSP-LAC shared their operational strategy, implemented in the Andes, which has comprised of an assessment on the gender issues in the water and sanitation sector in Peru and Bolivia; the development of tools to apply gender-sensitive approaches at institutional and project levels, and the dissemination of this methodology through national workshops in Peru. Next steps for Honduras include the design and implementation of a gender assessment to get a baseline for putting into practice strategies for gender equity in water and sanitation projects. WSP-LAC will provide technical assistance to these efforts.
